The Job You Have Today Might Not Exist Tomorrow
When I was teaching entrepreneurship, early in the fall semester, I’d stand in front of my entrepreneurship students and tell them:
“The job you have today will change or disappear, and the job you will have tomorrow hasn’t even been invented yet.”
I didn’t say it to scare them, I said it to push them to think differently about their careers. If change is inevitable, the real question becomes: so what do you do?
That same idea was echoed recently by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who said he’s more concerned about a 62-year-old who isn’t adapting fast enough than a recent college graduate losing their job.
The reently published Future of Jobs Report 2025 from the World Economic Forum drives the point home:
39% of today’s core skills will change or become obsolete by 2030
22% of jobs will be disrupted — replaced or redefined
The most in-demand skills? Analytical thinking, AI literacy, adaptability, and collaboration
It’s one thing to see the numbers. It’s another to feel the pressure of knowing your skills may not keep up with the pace of change. That’s why the leaders who will thrive are the ones who keep evolving their skill set to ensure that that their skills remain contemporary, if not cutting edge. .
Six Ways to Keep Your Skills (and Your Leadership) Relevant
Make upskilling a habit, not an event
Continuous learning keeps you in sync with change falling behind and then trying to catch up.Stretch into new domains
Take on projects that force you to work outside your comfort zone.Blend technical expertise with leadership and strategy
The ability to connect big-picture vision with execution and technical skills will only grow in value.Invest in and expand your network
Relationships create opportunities, broaden your perspective and are good for your social wellness.Lead by example
Show your team that invested in your own skills and theirs so that they are encouraged to keep their skills current.Seek expertise to evolve toward AI
Don’t assume AI transformation will “just happen.” Bring in knowledge, tools, and partners to guide your team and organization through it.
